Course Description

This course critically examined and analyzed North American cultural, political, and economic contexts and current trends of housing. The intersecting complex systems of housing were explicated through historical cultural contexts, dominant zoning, finance, and production systems, contemporary reforms, alternative housing and ownership types, and leading-edge fabrication and construction technologies and methods. Each week had a particular focus, which was addressed by readings, lectures, student presentations, and discussions.

During the semester student teams developed affordable housing campaigns, including opinion pieces for local media outlets. Guest critics included experts in housing development, planning, transportation, and media. The final products were comprehensive reports of team research outcomes.
